Intertexuality

Intertexuality is used to describe parts between films. Very obviously films borrow certain camera angles, close ups and the feel of Mise En Scene from other films.
The term intertexuality has changed meanings in a few ways over time. In film however, this term remains a way to describe the way something is taken from a clip and shown in another way or in another film. In class, we watched many examples of this. Many thrillers have taken parts of the well known horror "Psycho" and used these parts in their own thrillers.
These parts are taken from the murder shower scene, which at the time was horrific. The camera work in Psycho is used well. When watching this you notice many close-ups on objects. The knife, the shower head and her screaming mouth. These elements are taken and used to recreate that horrific feeling for viewers in other films. The most obvious in my opinion is shown below. The shower curtain Close Up is copied exactly by The Stepfather and the Shower Head Close Up copied by The Roommate Shower scene:

Shower Head CU in The
Roommate

The music in this scene also adds to the atmosphere, it's very dramatic and fierce. Lots of fast paced deep drones, these are also all used in films today.
For a very basic example of Intertexuality i would say spoofs such as Airplane and all the Scary Movie films are Intertexual in that they would not exist without other movies created before them. This is a huge example and i wouldn't go as far to say that films like The Stepfather and What Lies Beneath would not have been made without Psycho, but you can definitely see in specific scenes that they have taken things from Psycho.
