A genre is a category which is characterised by similarities, so in the world of film a genre is different types of films. So you can get comedy, horror, thriller, sci-fi, romance etc..
Sub genres is basically a genre within a genre. So the sub genre breaks down the film into a more defined category. So an example of sub genres can be comedy/romance, political/thriller.
As we are looking at Thrillers, a most common sub genre for thrillers is psychological thriller. The suspense in a psychological thrillers are created by mainly two characters eating away at each others minds, where as in a thrillers they concentrate mainly on the plot to create suspense.
